Local Library Encourages Reading And Learning Through Various Challenges

By CASSIDIE JONES

Moapa Valley Progress

The Summer Reading Program at the Moapa Valley Library in Overton makes reading fun for youngsters this summer.

School is out, and the Moapa Valley Library Summer Challenge is in full swing. The first event, the Summer Challenge Kick-Off, took place on Friday, June 7. Ice cream was served and excitement built towards the library’s upcoming summer events.

On top of reading challenges, the Library is offering both weekly programs and larger events for most ages. While the weekly challenges are aimed at younger readers, some weekly programs and clubs are being offered for older kids as well. The Summer Challenge not only encourages children to read, it allows them to learn and earn prizes while doing so.

In previous years, this summer long event was known as the “Summer Reading Challenge”. Kids that signed up could read and participate in various activities to fill up their “tickets” and win small prizes.

This year, the name has been updated to the “Summer Challenge”, because participants are now able to fill up their prize tickets in even more ways than just reading. Although many of the ticket squares can still be filled by reading and attending activities, there are also a variety of other ways for children to win prizes, including learning how to do homework or completing various challenges.

Activities that can be completed in order to win prizes are determined by a readers age. Smaller children may have simpler tasks, while older readers may be given a bit more of a test.

This Friday, June 14, is the Library’s “Red, White, and Blue Challenge”. Readers are encouraged to wear red, white and/or blue. There will also be a small flag related craft for those who wish to participate. These activities will take place at 11:15 a.m. at the Moapa Valley Library located in Overton.

The library is also teaming up with various groups throughout the summer to bring entertainment to the valley. The Fratello Marionettes will be the first group to make an appearance. The group of puppeteers will be doing an interactive performance at the Old Logandale School on Friday, June 21 at 11 a.m. This event is usually for children ages four to 12, but parents and older children can enjoy the presentation as well.

This Moapa Valley Library Summer Challenge will be going on until July 31, which means that those who wish to participate still have plenty of time to get in on all the fun.

To sign up, just visit the library and children will be assigned to the appropriate age group. All of the programs being offered this summer are free and open to the public.

For any questions regarding the Summer Challenge Program, or any of the weekly group activities being offered, visit the Moapa Valley Library facebook page or call (702) 397-2690 for more information.
