The Moapa Valley High School held its annual Back to School Bash at the Logandale park on Tuesday, Aug. 14. The social event was planned far in advance by the MVHS Student Council to help the students have a fun time meeting up after the summer.
Student Council President Jacob Leavitt said it all came together well, with just a few stressful moments. However, all the stress and groundwork made for a fun and classic celebration.

The Bash is a traditional gathering that has been observed ever since the Moapa Valley high school switched to new buildings in 1993.

“We’ve had them for over 20 years,” said MVHS teacher Jeff Keel. “It gives all the new kids opportunities to mingle and introduce themselves. It draws everybody together.”

Students were not the only ones to come together, many of the event’s highlights were contributed by the local community. The Moapa Valley Fire District set up a slip n slide on the lawn for those wishing to escape the sweltering heat. Frisbee and volleyball were provided as recreational games. The park’s pool was also opened, allowing the Belly Flop contest to take place as it has every year.

Keel served as the judge of this annual favorite and announced sophomore Jayme Carvajal to be the belly flop winner.

In order to win, Keel disclosed it all depends on several factors including, “How high they jump, their form, if they made a loud sound and if they made a large splash.”

Along with the activities, foods and drinks were provided. A part of the staff, including Charlie Cooper and Suzanne Garlick, helped to prepare and serve the meal. The school’s Ag class provided pomegranate flavored snow cones with the help of Ag Teacher Denise O’Toole and students Makenzie Kephart and Ryan McMurray. Kephart said they did this as a way to persuade new students to become interested in FFA and to help everyone have a fun time.

When asked about their experience at the bash, students agreed they felt the friendliness and laid-back vibe of those around them.

A member of the MVHS student council, Abigail Dursteler said, “I just like seeing everyone come together and meet new people. It’s especially cool for all the new freshman and foreign exchange students to get to know everybody.”

The bash was a great time for all ages and classes in creating memories that will stay with them for the coming years. Freshmen are given the opportunity to meet peers and teachers they’ll be with for years and seniors can experience one of the last thrills that come from high school.

“Just enjoy it while you can,” recent graduate of MVHS Ashlyn Western advised. “I wish I would’ve known how fast it goes by.”

The bash came and went later that evening. However, the welcoming atmosphere will hopefully be displayed throughout the remaining school year and the memories made will be remembered throughout all the student’s days.
