The Moapa Valley High School Tennis teams put in an eventful week playing a total of three matches.
The teams started off with a home match on Tuesday, September 3 against Adelson. The boys’ won its match, 10-8. All three boys doubles teams won their matches including Slade Graham and Gavin Hadley, Jacob Leavitt and Kolby May, and Cole Neilson and Caleb Dalley. The girls’ team won their match 12-0 on a forfeit.
On Wednesday, the Pirate tennis hosted another home match against Meadows High School. This one was a much rougher road for the Pirates. The boys’ team struggled and lost with a score of 4-14. Despite the team loss, the unstoppable boys double team of Slade Graham and Gavin Hadley held out strong winning 3-0 in their matches. The girls’ team lost lost its match 0-18.
MVHS Tennis Coach Gavin Coburn expressed how proud he was of his team despite the losses. “The team is improving and realizing the importance of playing well each match!” Coburn said.
Wrapping up the week, the Pirates travelled to Las Vegas for an away match on Friday against Sunrise Mountain. This match ended the week on a high note for the Pirates with both girls’ and boys’ teams winning their matches.
The girls won by forfeit in the league standings because Sunrise Mountain doesn’t have an official team. Still, all the girls that played in informal, friendly matches against Sunrise Mountain opponents won. These included the doubles team of Aubrey and Savannah Aikele going 3-0, and singles player Karli Keller going 2-0.
The MVHS Boys’ team won a close match, 9-8. Kolby May went 2-1 in a singles match. In addition, all the boys doubles teams, including the incredible duo of Graham and Hadley, won their matches.
