The Moapa Valley High School Football team travelled to Sunrise Mountain on Friday and made quick work of the Miners with a final score of 37-0 on a running clock.
“It was not perfect” said MVHS Head Coach Brent Lewis, “but we played a good game!”

Lewis wore a smile as the Pirates showed why many at the beginning of the season chose them to represent the south in the state championship game. Before the game there was enthusiasm before the game; yelling and a loud cheer by the team as they prepared for the kick off. It was the final game of a long four game road trip for the Pirates. The noise came from the players who had found the motivation to get loud and play Pirate football. They proved in the first quarter just how dangerous they can be.

Sunrise Mountain had some speed and used it on the opening kick off. They returned the ball to the Pirates 47-yard line. But the Pirate defense held the Miners to two yards forcing a punt.

The Miners struggled with punting most of the night. This time, the Pirates took control of the ball after a 19-yard punt to the 30-yard line. After a nine yard gain, it was Hayden Redd who found a hole up the middle. Being slowed down at the line of scrimmage he broke free then raced 61-yards for the Pirates’ first touchdown. Justin Proffitt’s extra point gave the Pirates a 7-0 lead with 9:36 in the first quarter.

The next Miners possession was ill-fated. Will Uri sacked the Miners quarterback. Then on the very next play the Miners threw an interception. Garrett Clove picked off the pass and carried the ball to the Miners 20-yard line. Cameron Reese then found Austin Heiselbetz in the end zone for the touchdown. The extra point gave the Pirates a 14-0 lead.

Next series had a similar result. Nathan Dalley intercepted a Miners pass giving the Pirates the ball on their own 40-yard line. But this time, the Pirates turned over the ball on a fumble at the 43.

Moapa Valley scored their next touchdown when Hayden Redd caught a bubble screen and raced for his second touchdown of the evening: 23-yards. The extra point made it a 21-0 lead with 2:42 to play in the first half.

It was Steele Skinner who took a long 24-yard run moving the ball to the Miners 15-yard line. But the Pirates were unable to move the ball more than two yards after Skinners run. Nevertheless, Proffitt came in and kicked a 30-yard field goal for a 24-0 Pirate lead. With 5:20 to play in the first half.

The next Miners series went quickly. Redd got a sack. Then on the next play Austin Heiselbetz intercepted a pass. The Pirates took over at the Sunrise Mountain 46-yard line with 4:28 to play in the first half.

A few minutes later, Redd found the endzone for the third time. This time a 13-yard run giving the Pirates a 30-0 lead. .

It was in the third quarter with 8:52 to play that Russell Bodily finished a Pirate drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Proffitt kicked the extra point for the final score.

For the rest of the game, Moapa Valley played many who do not get a lot of playing time. Clove intercepted his second pass late in the third quarter. Luke Barlow intercepted another Miner pass (the fifth of the game) with 4:56 to play in the game.

Boulder City will be travelling to Moapa Valley on Friday night. The game starts at 7PM. It will be the start of a three game run for the Pirates at home.

Boulder City comes into this game having beaten SLAM 20-0 last week. They run the ball most of the time and will look to knock the Pirates off. The Eagles beat Cheyenne the second week of the season 12-7. They have had this game circled on their calendar setting up the playoffs for both teams.

The Pirates are 2-0 in league played tied for the top spot in the league with Virgin Valley.
