The Moapa Valley Resource Fair had its second go-around on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Fine Arts Building at the Clark County Fairgrounds. Fifty-six vendors showed up to provide information on an array of resources and services available to Moapa Valley residents.

“The turnout was better than the first one, but it was still lighter than what we expected,” said event coordinator Larry Griffiths. “We figure it was because we had competition from other events as well as it is a 3-Day weekend.”

The American Red Cross was emphasizing the need for smoke detectors in homes. Representatives were letting attendees know of an American Red Cross program providing free smoke detectors to homeowners. “Everything we have to help is to help people stay safe in a variety of emergencies,” said Connie Morton of the Red Cross.

The Red Cross booth also highlighted its nationwide Pillowcase Project school kids in grades 3-5. The Pillowcase Project was started after a college student used a pillowcase to hurriedly put essentials into during a natural disaster. The program helps students know what to pack in an emergency.

Another resource, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, presented services provided for senior citizens and their families. These services include transportation, food, respite care and minor home repair.
Respite Manager, Cory Lutz was ecstatic about the fair. “We had some interested that didn’t even know we existed,” he said. “This helped us big time in advertising and educating the community here.”

Another popular vendor was the State of Nevada Division of Welfare Services which emphasized SNAP and Medical Assistance. Other successful vendors were the local FIT Physical Therapy, VFW, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Scouting for Girls, Ministering Angels of Moapa Valley, and JustServe.org.

A brand-new local organization that was present was Narcotics Anonymous which offers group therapy and support services to family and close relationships of drug addicts. Program representative Cypriene DeCuir stated the meeting is held on Tuesdays from 5 – 6 pm at Calvary Community Chapel located at 210 N. Anderson Street in Overton.

“This is a much-needed organization for the community,” said DeCuir. “It is exciting that we now have a Nar-anon here.”

Griffiths was very pleased and happy as all the vendors asked to return for the next fair. Griffiths thanked the Moapa Valley Revitalization Project, JustServe.org, all the vendors, the the volunteers who helped make the event a huge success.

The next event for JustServe.org is the Moapa Valley Food Pantry this Saturday starting at 7:00 am for distributing food. Griffiths said that more volunteers are needed to assist. Volunteers should be there a little before 6:00 am.
