Volunteers from the Moapa Valley Fire District (MVFD) received their first live training from the district’s new Emergency Medical Services Director at a session held on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Logandale Fire Station #73. The training was part of an ongoing Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification series that is in progress until Feb. 2020.

Dr. Ryan Hodnick, the newly contracted EMS Medical Director, taught a segment of the class dealing with the use of “nasal bugles.” These devices open airways to help with CPR and mouth to mouth procedures.

Hodnick resides in Placides, New Mexico. His company MEDIC oversees medical care and procedures for EMS and other medical offices in Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Texas. Hodnick also did his residency at UMC in Las Vegas after graduating from University of New Mexico Medical School in 2010.

As the new medical director for the EMS services in MVFD, Hodnick’s duties are mainly administrative. He deals with the laws, regulations, finances and procedures that must be followed for the local area.

Hodnick said that he was very impressed with the local community for its engagement. “Everyone in the valley seems to care about the community and lots of people are really supportive in what’s going on in the community,” he said.

Hodnick did see some things pertaining to EMS services that he would like to see changed. “First, more accessibility to medicines is needed,” he said. “There are certain medications that are strictly regulated in Clark County that need to be obtained to help the improvement of the EMS Services for Moapa Valley.”

Another issue he sees is that more medical skills should be taught and available to EMS personnel. “There are so many things that the county makes hard to be able to obtain that would be of huge help in a small community like here,” Hodnick said.

MVFD Chief Steven Neel said that he is excited to have Hodnick under contract to be an advisor to the district. “This is really the first face time the community has had with our new Medical Director,” Neel said. “But he has been here three times in 3 months and he has been a big help in getting our stations more self-sufficient.”

EMT Certification classes will continue every week. There are 27 students right now enrolled in this first training. Neel stated that EMT certification classes will be offered annually.

“This community is so well trained and well-equipped with what they need to provide excellent care,” Hodnick said. “We still have more to do but it is nice having a community that is ready to work.”
