Republicans from Virgin and Moapa Valleys alike gathered at Charles Arthur Hughes Middle School in Mesquite last week to participate in the GOP precinct meeetings. The meetings were held on Saturday morning, Feb. 15, and brought a total of about 25 participants from throughout the northeastern Clark County communities.

“We were hoping for a lot more,” said Linda Shannon of the Mesquite Republican Women’s Club who helped organize the event. “But with the party pretty much having its presidential nominee already in place, it seems there was less interest this year.”

Even so, the party faithful were there. The meetings yielded about 16 people who signed up to be delegates to the Clark County Republican Convention in March.
One of the important functions of the convention is to put the party platform in place. Virgin Valley resident Denise Hamada-McMahon serves on the county platform committee and was helping at the precinct meetings.

“We have heard from a lot of party leaders, elected officials and party members who have given input for the platform this year,” Hamada-McMahon said. “We have received more than 100 new planks to the platform, and we have to narrow that down to only 15.”

Hamada-McMahon said that much of the input was centered around softening some of the platform’s language to become more inclusive. “We want to pull in independents, libertarians and maybe even some of the more moderate Democrats,” she said. “We are trying to make it more like the new GOP with newer ideas and a bit softer platform.”

Delegates will have the opportunity to vote on the final draft of the platform as it is presented at the County Convention, Hamada-McMahon said.

Other than turnout, Shannon was generally pleased with how things went at the event. “It is always a good time to get together and build a team spirit,” she said. “It has been nice to do that.”

The Mesquite Republican Women’s Club is opening up a campaign office in the city of Mesquite which they hope to be a resource to all of the surrounding areas, including Moapa Valley. The new office expects to be open by mid-November and will be located on Mesquite Blvd. near VJ’s BBQ Sports Bar.

“When people need campaign signs, brochures, help in voter registration and so on, we plan to have all of that information available at our office,” Shannon said.

Watch the Progress over the next few weeks for when the office has its opening.

  1. All Republicans must agree on how we can better serve our great president. Even a small hint of disloyalty will not be tolerated. If you disagree in any way, you will be identified as the lowlife RINO you are and you will be crushed.
