Work Continues On Overton Park Improvements

By NICK YAMASHITA

The Progress

A work crew pours concrete for the new tennis court surface at Overton Park.

Downtown Overton residents and business owners have noticed a flurry of activity in the area of the Overton Park this summer.

“I just kept seeing these big trucks going down there and wasn’t sure what was going on,” said Vanette Christensen who an owner of Xtreme Stitch in Overton.

In response to these questions, Clark County Parks and Recreation: Recreation Specialist Lauralyn Robison said that there are some big changes going on at the local parks.

The biggest project is at Overton Park. The tennis courts at the park are all being resurfaced. The park will then have a new tennis court and a regulation-size outdoor basketball court, Robison said.

The tennis courts down in Overton had not been redone in more than 30 years, Robison said.
“The concrete had big cracks in it, uneven spots on the court and had been banged up over the years, Robison said. “It was way overdue to have this done.”

The surface will also have the lines drawn on it for pickleball as well. This sport has gained popularity in the United States in recent years, especially amongst the active senior population.
Robison was ecstatic to announce that plans are in place to provide pickleball activities on the new court. Details on this will be announced later, she said.

“Another exciting thing being done for improvements in Logandale Park is the lighting,” Robison added. “There will be lighting added to the grassy area and playground area.”

Robison added that these improvements have been a long time coming. “Many people were wondering why we are doing it now when Nevada is struggling in debt,” she said. “But the finances for this were already assigned to these projects and must be used for these projects.”

Christensen was excited when she heard of the new improvements in Overton Park. “It is outstanding to have recreational equipment for the kids out here,” she said, “especially during this time involving lack of sports and recreational hobbies due to COVID-19.”

The project is expected to be completed in October.
