The Moapa Valley High School Varsity Girls Soccer team hosted a game against a team from Mojave High School on Tuesday, September 3. Though the Lady Pirates fought hard, they lost the game with a final score of 3-1.

“Our girls just didn’t have a good game,” said Head Coach Lisa Cornwall of the team’s performance. “It was definitely a team that we could beat and we should have won it. We just weren’t up to where we should be.”

The Rattlers came out to an early lead in the game. By the end of the first half, the Mojave team had put three unanswered points on the board.

The Moapa team seemed to start to catch its stride in the second half, holding the Rattlers scoreless for the half.

“We started to wake up a little bit in the second half,” Cornwall said. “But I think that we had let it get too far; and it’s tough to keep your head up when you have to dig yourself out of that kind of a hole.”

Still, the Pirate offense pushed against the Mojave opposition throughout the second half. The Moapa team took shot after shot at the goal throughout the second half but couldn’t get a break. Lady Pirate Tylee Evans alone made over 18 shots at the goal during the game, but came up short on every one.

“We were playing well and pushing pretty hard in that second half,” Cornwall said. “But we were just having a problem with finishing and putting the ball into the net.”

The Pirate’s one goal of the game was scored by Mikayla Jackson. She was granted a free kick due to a foul on the field. Taking the kick at about 35 yards out, the ball made a direct line to the Mojave keeper. It hit the goalie, fell to the ground and then rolled slowly into the net to put the Pirates on the board.

The Lady Pirate JV team also played the Mojave JV in a game immediately following. The Moapa team won that game with a score of 3-2.

Romina Parra made two of the three Pirate goals and Callie Gollahon scored the third goal.

“The JV girls absolutely played well,” Cornwall said. “They looked like they were having fun.”
