The Moapa Valley High School girls soccer team played two games last week; winning the first one and losing the second.

The first game was played at home in Overton against Sunrise Mountain High School of Las Vegas. The Lady Pirates won that game in a 3-1 victory.

Tylee Evans scored two goals in the first half while the two teams tussled back and forth for field position. It was in the first half that the Miners scored their one and only goal.

In the second half, the Pirate offense put pressure on the Miners’ goal. At one point, Tylee Evans brought the ball down the field past a number of Sunrise Mtn. defenders. She found Mary Sheldon wide open in front of the goal. Sheldon took the shot and it was good giving the Pirates their final goal of the game.

Throughout the half, the Miner offense was stopped by Pirate defense. Pirate defender Linna Hernandez seemed to be everywhere at once on the Pirate side of the field stopping the Miners in their tracks and pointing the ball back into home possession.

On the occasions that the Miner offense was able to get through to attempt a shot at the goal, Pirate keeper Cymoni Cooper stopped every shot. Nothing got through to the net in the second half for the Miners.

In the second game of the week, the Lady Pirates travelled to Las Vegas for a game against Desert Pines High School. Here they lost with a score of 7-1.

It was a fast-paced game. According to head coach Lisa Cornwall, the Moapa team lost focus at key moments in the game which opened the door for the Jaguars to score multiple goals.

“If you walked onto the field and watched them play you would never guess that we were so far behind,” Cornwall said. “We were just not capitalizing on opportunities and we lost focus a lot of times.”

The one goal that the Lady Pirates were able to score during the game was kicked by Diana Robles on an assist by Tylee Evans.
