The Moapa Valley High School football program travelled to beautiful Fillmore Utah last week where they converged with six other high school programs for four days of football camp and scrimmage games. The other high school programs at the camp included Beaver High School, American Leadership Academy from Spanish Fork Utah, Emery High School of Castledale Utah, Millard High School from Fillmore, Virgin Valley High School and Sunrise Mountain High School from Las Vegas.

The Pirates are coming off a very exciting 2014 season after winning their 16th state championship and finishing the season undefeated.

Head Coach Brent Lewis and his coaching staff took 61 players to Fillmore. That was enough for three teams: a freshman, JV and Varsity.
“I was pleasantly surprised with how well we did,” said Lewis. “We were solid all the way through the week. We struggled a little with Emery as we had a hard time following the ball in their Jet and swept series.”

But the Pirates figured it out as the defense improved with each play. Moapa Valley played all the teams but one. They did not face Beaver.

The camp is a great way to start the season as it gives the program a few days to evaluate the teams to get an idea of what they are capable of. The morning sessions involved team technique and instruction on the offense and defense. In the evening they would scrimmage other teams.

In past years the camp has only had four teams involved. But this year, the seven teams meant each team would play most teams once with a 15 play series for each team then a rotation to another team. The field was divided in half with a scrimmage going at each end of the field.
The Moapa Valley players returned home on Thursday night.
