Lyon Middle School recently welcomed motivational speaker and author, DJ Eagle Bear Vanas, for an inspirational assembly. During his presentation, Mr. Vanas delivered his powerful message about “embracing the warrior spirit”, which also happened to be the school’s character philosophy. Students were captivated by his personal (and sometimes humorous) anecdotes about how he overcame difficulties to excel in both his personal life and career.

Vanas encouraged students to explore their world. He illustrated this point by telling students how he took his first airplane ride at the age of 13. This experience triggered a love of flying that led Vanas to obtain his pilot’s license at age 17.
Emphasizing the importance of setting goals, he said, “You need to start thinking about the future now.”

Growing up, he had read about the world beyond his home and only dreamed of visiting such faraway destinations. As a result of his persistence and education, Mr. Vanas was able to make his dreams come true. He has traveled the world as a motivational speaker and as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.
Throughout the assembly, Mr. Vanas reiterated his message that a good education will open doors to the future.

“School is the right place to be,” he said. “It won’t always be fun, but it will be worth it.”
Finally, Vanas challenged students to apply the warrior spirit to their lives immediately by consciously making small improvements each day. He encouraged students to be open to new experiences and to start exploring their interests.
“Read books, talk to people, and start pursuing your interests,” he said.

Reflecting on his life, Vanas stated he would not be where he is today had he not received an education and been open to new challenges.
DJ Vanas is a tribally-enrolled member of the Odawa Nation. He has spoken at the White House twice—among many other engagements worldwide.
