“Building your own home is about desire, fantasy. But it’s achievable; anyone can do it.”
Kevin McCloud
British designer and presenter

Although McCloud’s homebuilding declaration may seem a little glib, for Moapa Valley residents interested in undertaking the “fantasy” of constructing their own home it’s definitely reachable, especially with the help of local contractors Jason and Kristy St. John.

Doing business as SO Construction, the St. Johns have been in the building business in one form or another for more than 25 years. Jason said they both have a background in concrete and have worked to establish solid street creds in Southern Nevada as general contractors.

“We started out in Moapa Valley as J&K Builders,” Jason said. “We built several local homes as J&K and then the economy started to tank. We held on for as long as we could but in the end we just weren’t making it.”

Jason said after J&K they worked solar field maintenance at the big Ivanpah Solar Power Facility at the base of Clark Mountain in California across from Primm at state line for four years. As the economy improved, however, the couple decided to get back to general contracting..
“Our roots are building, construction; we love building,” Jason said.

Although Jason said Kristy is “the designer, and I’m the builder,” he said they both “do everything on the jobsite, all aspects of constructing. She can build a house.”

The couple launched SO Construction about 6 months ago and opened an office at 280 N. Moapa Valley Boulevard, Suite E. After remodeling the office, the contractors moved in. They plan to stock it with myriad of different samples for every room in the house.

The St. Johns are licensed contractors adept at all levels and aspects of residential and commercial construction from the pad to the chimney.

The company resume includes new home construction; remodels and additions; commercial buildings; decorative concrete; new septic installs, and detached garages, shops and casitas. They plan to have a concrete division in the business and a framing division that will be headed up by Danny Bradford, formerly of DB Builders.

SO Construction is ready and able to jump in at the beginning of a project and worked until it’s finished, Jason said, “but we’re also available to bid at every phase of construction along the way.” Jason said.
The St. Johns, who live in Logandale, have been married for 24 years and have been in Moapa Valley for 18. They have three children including Breanna, 22; Jayden, 20, and 17-year-old Braeden, who will be a senior at Moapa Valley High School this fall.

Jason and Kristy are members of the Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce and are supporters of local sports.
“Above everything else, I want homebuilding to be fun not stressful,” Jason said. “I encourage anybody we build for to ask questions; don’t let it become a stressful situation.”
