Community Logo Contest Being Held By MVRP

Moapa Valley Progress

The Moapa Valley Revitalization Project (MVRP) is hosting a logo contest and opening it to the entire community. All residents are invited to submit their designs of a logo for the greater Moapa Valley communities.

MVRP President Mary Kaye Washburn said the goal is to have a logo that can be used by any organization in promoting, marketing and advertising Moapa Valley. Washburn added that many other small communities such as Kanab, UT, are already using logos to market and promote themselves.

Jean Gottschalk was the MVRP board member who originally came up with the idea for the logo and the contest. Gottschalk said that the vision is for all of the local associations and organizations to adopt the same logo so that when people see it—whether it be during the fair or a four-wheeling event—they’ll know “that’s Moapa Valley.”
“The first thing you need is a logo—a brand—you can promote,” said Gottschalk.

Logo entries will be accepted from August 20 to September 21. The MVRP board of directors will select three finalists based on originality, professionalism, legibility, and how well they represent Moapa Valley as a tourist destination. Those three finalists will then be published in the PROGRESS on September 26 so that community members can vote on their favorite designs. Votes will be accepted on the MVRP Facebook page and at various venues throughout the town. Voting will be open until October 2.

The winning logo and the artist’s biography will be announced and printed in the PROGRESS on October 10.
“We have a lot of creative people in Moapa Valley,” Washburn said. “So why not have [the logo] come from one of our residents in the community? Whether it be a small child or an accomplished artist, we’re just putting it out there for competition and hope to create the feeling that they are a part of everything.”

Gottschalk said he’s already contacted the art and design teachers at local schools to make sure students are able to get involved. “We are bringing crowdsourcing local,” Gottschalk said.
Marjorie Holland, the president of the Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce and treasurer of the MVRP, said she supports the contest.

Holland feels it will serve two purposes. In addition to helping to increase the town’s appeal, it will also create more cohesion throughout the local community, Holland said.
“We need more community involvement out here,” Holland added. “We’ve gotten a lot of it, but we need more.”

Any current or former Moapa Valley resident of any age is invited to submit one or more entries. There is no cash prize for the contest winner, but the logo will be widely used throughout the community.
