The sound of laughter, clapping and singing resounded from Ute Perkins Elementary School on Monday, Feb. 11, as students and teachers became involved with the Student Outreach performance of Mama’s Wranglers.

This local family band is from Henderson, Nevada where they are owners of the “Firelight Barn,” a Dinner Theatre. Their current show is “Dog House and Cowboy Kisses.”

The group has performed in 49 States, Canada and Europe for an approximate 300 road shows per year. This achievement was emphasized with a well-done rendition of “I’ve Been Everywhere.”

Their energetic program highlights the many talents of the group from clogging to singing to a variety of instruments including the banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, keyboard, mandolin, drums, spoons and yodeling.

The Student Outreach Programs are presented by various entertainment acts brought to the community by the Moapa Valley Performing Arts Council. These performers take time to attend one of the area schools, set up their equipment, perform and teach the students, tear down their equipment, travel to the night’s venue, reset their equipment and present the evening concert.

This energetic, talented family of four children and “Mama,” has been performing together for 18 years. They make sure the audience is engaged by having them clap and sing along. They even wander through the audience singing.

The youngest “Wrangler,” Skyler, wowed the audience with her yodeling, especially in “Yodel Your Troubles Away.”

This multi-talented group is successful in presenting many varieties of music from western (“Ragtime Cowboy Joe,” to “Country Roads Take Me Home” ) to rock (“Do The Twist” and “When I Was A Little Bitty Baby”) to pop (“For The Longest Time”) to easy listening (“Hallelujah”). Each number performed was highlighted by the instrumentals and the close harmony. Clogging was thrown in emphasizing the message. The sibling rivalry was an amusing addition to several numbers.

Ending the program, much too soon for the appreciative audience, the group sang a Military Medley of each branch’s identifying song and ending with a sing-a-long of “God Bless America.”

As they said their final goodbyes, they took a moment to thank local musician Gaye Nelson for loaning them her keyboard as theirs had refused to work properly earlier that day. They were preparing to take down the set and head to Arizona for the next show, but not before one more song; “Don’t Fence Me In.”

These events are sponsored in part by MVPAC, Individual Partners for the Arts which include Nevada Arts Council, America First Credit Union, Grant and Laurel Bushman, Moapa Valley Telephone Company, Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Board of County Commissioners.
