Logandale Skate Park Gets All New Equipment

By VICTORIA PRAY

A teen operates a scooter at the newly refurbished Logandale Skate Park. The facility received all new equipment last month.

The skate park portion of the Logandale Park reopened a couple of weeks ago after being closed for about five weeks. The skate boarding area designed specifically for local teens has been newly outfitted with all new equipment.

Local Parks and Rec director John Stastny said that the new equipment includes all of the same features as were there before. But with the added improvements, two additional ramp features have been added.
“Before it was a fairly basic level park,” Stastny said. “With the new equipment, it has raised it into more of an intermediate level skate park.”

The skate park was closed at the beginning of February because County staff had deemed the equipment unsafe. The old equipment had been installed twelve years ago in 2007, and had been well used. There were large holes in the surfaces of the ramps which posed a danger to users, county staffers determined.

Stastny explained that it was not any intentional or malicious damage that had closed the park.
“Kids just love to use that facility, which is a good thing,” Stastny said. “It had seen a lot of time and use, so it was time to update it.”

Clark County Department of Real Property Management had teamed up with the local Parks and Rec staff to accomplish the task. County crews removed the old equipment and replaced it with brand new ramps and features.

“This was really needed out here,” Stastny said. “The kids have been using it ever since we reopened and they really seem to love the improvements. And it is lucky because it is the best time of year for it to be done.”

Local teens were positive about the changes. Eleventh grader Kai Haiola said that he is enjoying the improvements.
“It is pretty awesome,” Haiola said. “They made new lines for the skaters to enjoy. Also, with the new park we don’t have to avoid holes in the boards because they aren’t there anymore.”

Word of the improvements has spread quickly and the park has become busy once again with kids enjoying the opportunity to try new tricks and hang out.
The park improvements happened just in time for Spring Break and many are looking forward to spending time there.

Stastny encouraged community members to do a degree of self-policing and keep watch over the new equipment. “It’s great that kids are using it and we want to make sure that it stays operational for a long time,” he said. “So we just need help from community members both old and young. If you see someone doing anything destructive, say something to someone: either to parks and rec staff or to the police.”
