Vaulter Takes 1st In State

The Moapa Valley High School Track and Field teams travelled to Las Vegas last weekend to compete in the state championship meet. Both the Pirate boys and girls teams had some outstanding individual performances at the meet.

The Pirate girls had a state champion. Sophomore Hanna Watson won the state pole vault championship with a vault of 11 feet and a new school record. Watson also placed second in the long jump with a jump of 16-08, a personal record. She took third place in the triple jump with a jump of 34-02.25 a personal record; and third in the 100 meter hurdle with a time of 15.87 another personal record. Four events, four medals.

Senior Ashlyn Western finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.27. In the 1600 meter run Western took fifth place with a time of 5:23.38 a personal record. She also finished eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:17.20.

Emma Humes finished fourth in the 3200 meter run with a new Personal record and school record. Her time was 11:52.82. She also placed sixth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:35.44. Humes is just a freshman with a long career ahead!

Skotlyn Hill placed sixth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.16 a new personal record. The 4X200 meter relay team finished eighth with a time of 1:55.34. That team consisted of Bailee Andrew, Alexis Gould, Coy Overson and Skotlyn Hill.

The 4X800 relay team finished in fourth place with a time of 10:31.96. The team consisted of Shelby Olson, Emma Humes, Andi Hillstead and Ashlyn Western.

Jerrick Stastny finished with his best time in his high school career placing fourth in the 800 meter run. He set a personal record with a time of 1:58.97. Stastny is one of a handful of Pirates who has run this event under two minutes.

Preston Humes placed sixth in the 1600 meter run and third in the 3200 meter run. Both times were personal records. The 1600 in 4:37.03 and the 3200 in 9:56.75. Preston is also one of just a handful of Pirates who has run a 3200 under ten minutes.

Hunter Davis ran the 110 meter hurdles where he placed eighth with a time of 20.01.
The 4X200 meter relay team placed seventh with a time of 1:41.11. The team consisted of Carson Heiselbetz, Lex Bowman, Jayme Carvajal and Tristan Lehman.

The 4X800 relay team medaled with a time of 8:22.51 finishing in third place. The team consisted of Grady Call, Bryton Dorsey, Preston Humes and Jerrick Stastny.

Josh Cox finished fifth in the discus throw with a distance of 132-09. Yadon Witsken finished fifth in the pole vault with a vault of 11-03. Tristan Lehman finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 19-07.75.

On the team level, the Moapa teams went into the State Championship meet in a strong position. Just the week before the MVHS girls had taken first place in the southern regional meet while the Pirate boys team had placed second.

After the final race on Saturday the girls team had finished in third place with 65 points. Spring Creek won the state title easily with 137 points. Tahoe Truckee was the state runner-up with 97 points. Mojave finished fourth while Virgin Valley finished in fifth place. Boulder City finished in sixteenth place with just 11 points.

The Pirate boys team placed ninth in the state meet with 35 points. The meet was led by Mojave who won its second consecutive state title. Mojave beat everyone by almost double with 133 points. Sparks was the state team runner-up with 68.5 points. Churchill County finished third with 62.5 points. Tahoe Truckee finished fourth with Spring Creek finishing fifth. Virgin Valley finished in eleventh tied with Del Sol with 32 points.
