Moapa Library Showcases New Improvements

By VICTORIA PRAY

Moapa Valley Progress

With the end of the first month of summer right around the corner, the folks at Moapa Town Library is just starting their fun. They started the summer off with a magic show by Adam London and are ending this month with an outdoor movie night on June 29 at 8:00 pm. .

The movie will be Mary Poppins Returns and they hope to make film screenings a monthly event until the end of this fall.

In addition there is the “Summer Challenge” designed to inspire the kids to read more and find a love for learning.

But that is not all that is new this summer in Moapa. To help inspire everyone that comes into the Moapa Library, the Clark County Library District (CCLD) asked all the Outlying Branch Associates to design updates for their libraries.

Moapa librarian Jan Johnson, who has been working for the CCLD for over 20 years, was put in charge of updating the Moapa facility in whatever way she saw fit and then run her plans by CCLD for final approval. This was an exciting prospect for Johnson.

She started by redoing the paint at the library, adding bright colors with bold circles of other colors. This was Johnson’s favorite part of all the updates because it made the Moapa library bright and cheerful, which was her top priority on changing the library.

In the children’s area Johnson added places to play with building blocks, puppets and much more.

Moving on to the teen space, Johnson said, “I want the teens to be able to come here and have their own place.” In doing so Johnson made a secluded area for the teens to read; surrounded by bookcases filled with teen fiction.

In the general area of the library, Johnson knew that the space needed to be for people to come read, and also a place that adults could come lay back on one of the couches, use one of the laptop computers, or spend an hour or two at the puzzle table completing one of the five hundred or thousand piece puzzles.

Johnson said that she is grateful to her staff for working hard and getting everything ready in time for this summer. And now, of course, she can’t wait for kids and adults to come to the newly designed library.
