Exchange Students Seeking Host Homes

By JENNA RHUDE

Moapa Valley Progress

The word is out! Moapa Valley is the place to be. Boasting a “Friday Night Lights” environment, Moapa Valley and the local high school offer a quiet, traditional American ideal that is a dream come true for many foreign students. And the demand among foreign exchange students to come here is high.

The Education First (EF) student exchange program has been matching students from other countries with local families in Moapa Valley for several years now. Last school year around 25 high school students from all over the world came and participated in everyday life and school activities here in this quiet American oasis town.

“Moapa Valley gives them so much,” said EF Regional Coordinator Brooke Redd who lives in Logandale. “The programs and activities that our local high school can offer the kids is amazing. Most students are surprised when they find out the school has an agricultural farm, or that they can take fashions, nutrition, ballroom dancing or weight lifting as a class. Not many high schools are able to offer multiple opportunities to their students, such as music, theater and sports. We are lucky here in our Valley.”

Moapa Valley High School is grateful for the exchange students coming into the school. Having these extra students adds to the school’s student population, which brings in more funding for the school from Clark County School District.

“This year we are looking at hosting around 20 students in the Valley,” Redd said. “However, we still need homes for around seven students, a few girls, but mostly boys. They are great kids, all of them.”
“Hosting an exchange student is a great lifetime experience,” Redd added. “It is one that could change your life forever. They are amazing kids.”

When Redd was asked what expectations a host family should have, she simply said, “If you’re trying to find a best friend for your child, that may happen. But if you are wanting for a sibling for your child(ren), that is a perfect wish.”

If individuals or families are interested in hosting an exchange student or learning more about the EF program, please contact Brooke Redd at (435) 590-4256 or find her on Facebook at Brooklyn Pulsipher Redd EF.
