CCSD Student Info Exposed In Data Breach

Nearly 560,000 students of the Clark County School District (CCSD) had personal information exposed in a data breach announced last week by the district.

On Wednesday, July 31, the CCSD Technology Division became aware of the breach which involved a computer software program called AIMSweb 1.0 provided by Pearson Clinical Assessment. This software is used for screening, assessing and monitoring student progress.

Parents were notified of the incident on Thursday, August 1 with a letter from CCSD Chief Technology Officer, Dan Wray.

The breach exposed first and last names of students, and in some cases their dates of birth, according to a CCSD statement also released on Thursday. No other information was compromised, the statement said.

“The type of information involved in this incident was extremely limited,” said Wray in the statement. “However, CCSD makes every effort to ensure the safety of private information online and we set high standards for our own data systems and those we contract with to conduct business.”

According to a CCSD information sheet on the incident, Pearson believed that the breach occurred in November 2018. Upon being alerted to the breach, Pearson launched a full review using security experts.

The breach was shown to affect other Pearson accounts with school and university organizations across the country. This included an estimated 114,000 students in the Washoe County School District enrolled between 2001 to 2016.

The CCSD is working with Pearson to ensure that all necessary precautions are in place moving forward, according to Wray.
“Some of the information was generated more than a decade ago and many of the students are no longer in our schools,” Wray said. “However, we are working to be proactive and providing this information to the public out of an abundance of caution so that families and individuals are aware of the incident.”

Pearson is also offering access to Experian credit monitoring services for individuals who may have been impacted by the breach. Those interested in learning more about this option may call 866-883-3309 or send an inquiry by email to aimsweb1request@pearson.com.

Additional questions about the incident can be addressed to CCSD by email at dataincident@nv.ccsd.net.
