Mesquite welcomed a much-anticipated new donut supplier to town with a grand opening celebration on Monday, Aug. 5.

Hole Foods Bakery opened its doors about two weeks ago in a soft opening to test the waters. The local owners wanted to test the wants and needs of the community initially. But the business has been gaining notoriety ever since.

The family owned and operated business is located at 12 W Mesquite Boulevard and is open Monday through Saturday from 5:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., or while the pastries last.

According to owner Paige Anderson, donuts are not staying in the display case very long.
“When we started we were like, ‘We’ll make 25 dozen donuts,’” Anderson said. “But that’s not what we’re making today! Now we’re making more like 80 to 85 dozen donuts a day.”

After quitting her previous job Anderson let her love of family, and of her grandmother’s donut recipe, guide her in her next direction. She and her husband wanted to do something as a family with their five little kids. And they didn’t want to miss out on evening activities.

“We just decided to do something crazy,” Anderson said. “[Hole Foods Bakery] is what we decided to do. We love our donuts. It’s my grandma’s recipe and so we’re like, ‘Oh we could do this’.”

Anderson admitted that getting the business up and operating was a lot of work. That’s mostly because the family did much of the work themselves. She said that it has been a great experience due in part to the support of the City of Mesquite and the health department who she said were great to work with.

“It just took a lot of time to get it to where we wanted it to be,” Anderson said. “And we’re still missing some stuff. You can’t open a business without it taking an arm and a leg.”

Hole Foods Bakery currently offers glazed, maple, chocolate and raspberry filled donuts as well as apple and raspberry fritters, cinnamon rolls and a variety of cookies.
“Our goal right now, after being open for two weeks, is just to get up and do donuts in the morning,” Anderson said. “Then we’re going to have cookies out during clean up; and when it’s done, it’s done.”

The family leaves their house at 2:30 am to begin the donut making process. And their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Anderson said that there has been a line of donut-seekers at the door each morning, waiting for the business to open at 5:15 a.m.
“It’s been great!” Anderson said with a laugh..” Overwhelmingly welcomed but, at the same time, a nightmare.”
