The Progress
Virgin Valley High School Track and Field program attended their first track meet in over a year on Saturday, April 17 at Sunrise Mountain High School in Las Vegas.
The number of athletes participating in track and field is far fewer than in years past, both across the district and on the local team. But the Bulldog team performed very well. Both the boys and girls teams took first place overall in the meet. It was a great start to what should be a very rewarding return to the track.
Head varsity coach Gary Hartman, who is in his 50th year of coaching track, said that he was impressed with the results from the meet, despite being short handed on both teams.
Hartman called a few of the highlights from the meet.
“Macie Bowler had a nice day with four first places for the girls,” Hartman said.
Bowler’s participated in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump, and triple jump.
“Jimmy Kelly led the way for the boys as he swept the jumping events,” Hartman added.
Kelly also took first in all of his events and including high jump, long jump, and triple jump.
Hartman felt that the team worked hard and did well. “It was nice to finally compete in a meet again,”
he said. “I thought we did well both on the girls and boys side. We have plenty of work to do but we have some potential.”
