The horseshoe pits at the Rising Star Resort were the center of attention on April 30 and May 1 as the Mesquite Senior Games (MSG) held its first Horseshoe Pitching Tournament. The event, which was all-new to the organization, turned out to be popular bringing nearly 50 participants.

Although COVID put a damper on many activities last year, it also kindled some new ideas and adaptations.
“It has been a spring Mesquite Senior Games season like no other!” said MSG Director Amy Bradshaw.

“Events have been specifically designed with a low risk to COVID and with the end goal to get our entire community involved with two all-ages events including the horseshoes.”

When hearing that Mesquite Senior Games was going to hold their first Pitching tournament Lathan Dilger was excited about it. Dilger is the President of Nevada State Horseshoe Pitching Association. In association with the Southern Nevada Horseshoe Pitching Association, he called Bradshaw to offer his help. Dilger traveled to Mesquite all the way from Pahrump for the event bringing other participants with him.

Together Bradshaw, Sandy Tudor, Event coordinator and Dilger organized this event at the Rising Star Resort.

The Resort had been closed awhile due to COVID. Nick Montoya, Director of City of Mesquite Department of Athletics and Leisure Services, along with MSG volunteers, worked hard to get the horseshoe pits back in shape for the tournament.

“A huge thanks goes out to the Rising Star for offering their beautiful venue,” Bradshaw said. “And special gratitude to Nick Montoya and his crew, the City of Mesquite, and Precision Aggregate Products for getting those pits championship-ready. The tournament ended with lots of smiles, and more than a few new friendships forged over the love of a ringer.”

Dilger said that he was surprised at the number of people who came to participate in this event. “I was not expecting this many,” he said. “We really needed more pits.”

Tudor and Bradshaw gave thanks to the sponsors, especially Rising Star for the use of their venue. Pizza Hut and Marine McKinney of ERA Realty.

There was a total of 48 participants. Some of these played both days. Friday was the singles tournament. Saturday was devoted to doubles teams.

The singles tournament was divided into four different divisions. First place gold medals went to Benj Rains in A Division, Kacey Dilger in B Division, Anita Sorenseon in C Division and Tracey Snoe in D Division.

Silver medals in singles went to A-Steve Lopez, B-Mike Nicosia, C-Larry Workman, D-Verlin Winderdahl.

Bronze medals in singles went to A-James Hatch, B-Rai Adams C-Mile Dedeic, D-Mike Hall
The doubles tournament on Saturday had some close matches. The results ended with some ties.
“It was decided to award the highest scores both gold medals and the second-place teams both gold metals,” Tudor said.

Receiving the gold medals were David Provost and Marie Hischi, Vance Dilger and Anita Sorensen. Keith Edwards and Melissa Snow.

Participant Dennis Ahrens said, “I thought it went pretty well, It was fun and I would come again.“
“In spite of the heat on Friday and the wind Saturday, I really believe all the participants had a good time,” Tudor said.

Bradshaw stated they are planning to include another Horseshoe Pitching Tournament to the MSG fall lineup later this year.

Dilger also said that he would like to bring professional horseshoe events to the community. “I will be talking with the City to bring the professional Horseshoe Pitching tournaments to Mesquite through the Southern Nevada Horseshoe pitching Association,” he said.
