Good Samaritans Rescue Dogs, Help Owner

By NICK YAMASHITA

The Progress

One of more than two dozen dogs rescued last week in the desert south of Overton. This one’s name is Logan after the town of Logandale.

What started last week as a post on social media, triggered one of the most extensive animal rescue efforts for the Moapa Valley community on Tuesday, June 15. And it resulted in helping a homeless man who was in distress.

During the hottest week in eighty years for southern Nevada and already in the 90-degree range, Logandale resident Marie Mahaney saw something disturbing on her way to the airport. She noticed that someone had apparently dropped three puppies on North Shore Rd., just before the Lake Mead Entry Station. Mahaney said that she was pressed for time, on the way to the airport and so couldn’t top to pick them up. So she posted a notice to social media which explained the urgent situation and said, “Hope someone goes out and gets them please.”

Within minutes, the entire area near the gate to Lake Mead National Recreation Area was teeming with local residents who had seen the post and were determined to help the puppies. With temperatures headed into triple digits that day, the crew of concerned citizens continued searching for quite some time with no luck.

Finally, a couple of the volunteers made contact with a man residing out there in an RV with several dogs that looked distressed.

After talking with the man, they learned that he is homeless from Maine and had 25 dogs in his possession. There was no water, no air conditioning, and little resources for the animals, let alone the man.

A non-profit animal rescue with friends in Overton was mobilized to begin helping the dogs. And community members stepped up to help the man to make his situation more livable.

The community stepped up through local residents and through are church organizations to help the man, providing him with a couple of small RVs for shelter, gasoline for his generator, food and dog food.

An air conditioning unit was donated to the man by Dan and Kandice Raymond, and a small portable unit was provided by the rescue organization.

The man had a couple of used vehicles but some of the components had broken down and are in need of repairs. He did receive a bicycle for transportation and some items for repairing the bike if needed.

The Nevada Voters for Animals rescue arrived on the scene and immediately went to work on getting permission to take the animals from the man in question. After hours, the organization was able to get 11 dogs rescued, a couple of other dogs adopted by community members, several children’s swimming pools donated with water and other items to help the dogs.

“It was a hard situation but we were so glad we were able to help make the rescue of several of the dogs and provide veterinary care for them,” said Gina Greisen, President of the Nevada Voters for Animals. “We can make sure they are spayed and neutered and taken care of. We are also working with the owner of the dogs, so we can get them in proper and better situations.”

Greisen also talked about how busy that the organization and its volunteers are during this season of the year.

“We had an additional 99 dogs taken in during the last weekend, mainly due to heat rescues,” stated Greisen. “It is a busy time for us. We spent a pretty penny on this rescue but it is worth it for the lives of the dogs.”

Greisen said that there was still a lot to do concerning the dogs found last week in the Moapa Valley desert.
“We are not done,” she said. We are still working on getting the situation as close to compliance as possible.”

Greisen was grateful to those who helped out with this rescue and will continue to provide services as the rescue mission continues.

“I really could not have done anything without the volunteers like Renan, Jasmine, and Brandy,” she said. “Also, the community members who helped, the Las Vegas Dog Resort who helped provide proper shelter for the animals. Thank you all so much.”

The Nevada Voters for Animals is always in need of supplies, monetary donations, and more. For more information, call (702) 660-8970.

  1. She didn’t have time to stop and pick the puppies up, a total of what, 5 mins tops? But had the time to make a post on social media “hoping” someone else would swing by and do what she SHOULD have done. What if they had gotten out in to the road? What if no one one made it out there before it was blistering hot in the middle of the day and they died? Then what? Then would you have had 5 minutes it to pick them up? You dont deserve credit in this story, you’re a monster. To the rest of the people in the valley that pitched in to help and do what this lady was too lazy to do, Kudos to you! I’m sure those puppies, that man, and the rest of his dogs appreciate you.
