LETTER: Kudos to Council

If you didn’t bother to attend last week’s Mesquite City Council meeting, you missed out on an interesting evening. The room was packed. So much so, that they had to bring in extra chairs. Nearly all were there for the last item on the agenda.

I admire their patience in waiting through the first 2 hours of the meeting. The topic was concerning the rezoning of the 14 acre parcel located off Pioneer Blvd between the two churches and the freeway. It is zoned for 10 multi-family housing for 10 people per acre (144 people). The developer wanted it changed to high density multi-family allowing him to build 28 apartment buildings with 352 apartments. It would also add some 650 parking spaces.

At least 20 people got up and expressed opinions on why they did not want this zone change approved. During the discussions it was pointed out that, if approved, this would be by far the largest apartment complex in the city. Others pointed out that it would represent 5% of the entire city’s population in a relatively small space.

Then the council members were allowed to voice their opinions. Two seemed to want to approve just because there is a shortage of homes in Mesquite. Some of the others were somewhat undecided. There was even a motion to table the item.

After the council had spoken, a man in the audience asked to speak. He was at first reminded that the time the public was allowed to speak had passed. Then it was determined that he was the developer, and they allowed him to speak.

He thanked everyone for their input. He said he could understand their issues with the zoning change.

Then he said the only way he was going to go ahead with the project was with the approval of the zone change. He further stated that he needed the council to vote in favor of it right then.

The council decided to address the motion that one of the members had made. They voted to table the issue.

Kudos to the council for not caving in to his pressure. If he is an honest man, he will not be building on that property.
