The bowling lands at Virgin River Resort were busy with activity on Saturday afternoon August 7. More than 75 competitors showed up for a big bowling tournament that was the last of the summer season activities for Mesquite Senior Games (MSG).

Event Director, Toni Gans described the tournament as a non-sanctioned tournament governed by the USBC governing rules. The best three out of four games in each singles and doubles were used for medal consideration.

“MSG bowling has had a lot of new competitors,” Gans said. “The diversity among the bowlers is remarkable. We have both locals and out-of-town competitors that participated. Some are league bowlers; some are just getting back into the sport while others are casual bowlers who just want to join the fun.”

Gans expressed appreciation to Mesquite Gaming for providing the lanes for the tournament and also for reserving a block of rooms for the out-of-town competitors.
Competition at the tournament was quite heated.

At one point, Dave Maves bowled 10 straight strikes and was going for a perfect 300 score in a game. He ended up with 287 and a Gold Medal for his age group 70-74.

Robert Craig said that he had seen the MSG ad and had given them a call for more information.
“I told them I had not bowled in many years and do not have a team to bowl with,” Craig said. “They fixed me right up with teammates and here I am. This is a great way to meet people. Everyone here is really positive. I will do this again. I joined the league.”

MSG Director Amy Bradshaw was on hand to announce an exciting development for the Games: a new corporate sponsor.

“Alignment Health Plan is coming on board the MSG family and will be serving as our annual healthcare sponsor,” Bradshaw said. “We are extremely excited for that partnership.”

Present at the tournament from was Rick Scroggs, Nevada Sales Director for Alignment Health Plan. Also present was broker/manager Tami Utites and sales agent John Belnap, both of whom will be staffing the local Alignment office.

Belnap, who intends to be active in MSG, had the idea that being a sponsor for Senior Games would be a good fit for Alignment, Scroggs said.
“Senior Games are all about keeping senior fit,” said Scroggs. “And so are we.”

MSG board members expressed excitement about the new sponsor.
“We are thrilled to have a yearly, hands-on sponsor that fits so well into our theme of keeping seniors fit,” said MSG Board membeer John Rosen. “The sponsorship will allow us to do more with the Senior Games.”

The MSG Fall schedule will begin on October 1. For more information visit www.mesquiteseniorgames.org.
