The sandwiches were stacking up fast last week at the new Subway location in downtown Overton. The new sandwich shop located at 123 S. Moapa Valley Blvd. had its grand opening on Wednesday morning, Oct. 6.

It didn’t take long for the word to get out that the new eatery had opened its doors. At mid-morning, people were already lining up to place their orders. By lunchtime, the line crawled out the front door and down the sidewalk at times.

Members of the Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce arrived at the restaurant at 9:30 am to celebrate with a ceremonial ribbon cutting out in front of the store.

“We are so happy to have you here,” said Chamber Past President Vanette Christensen who stood in at the event for current Chamber President Pam Duvall who was away last week. “This is something that we have needed for a very long time. And it just adds so much to our downtown area and to our community!”

Chamber board member and Moapa Valley Town Advisory Board Chairwoman Lois Hall was also in attendance. She took a moment after the ribbon cutting to put in her own lunch order for later in the day.
“I’m betting it is going to be very busy later today so I wanted to get my order in early,” Hall said.

It was a good bet. Hall was later found walking out of the restaurant with family members after eating there during the lunchtime rush.
“It was still a little bit of a wait,” Hall said. “But you can’t blame them with how busy it is. And it was so worth it! They did a great job.”

Overton Subway owner Brian Draper said that the opening of the new location had been a long time coming. Draper also owns both of the Mesquite Subway locations and his two sons Jamie and Nick manage them. The Drapers have had their eyes on setting up another shop in Overton for quite some time.

Brian said that they had identified the old Carly’s building as an ideal spot for a Subway shop. But it took some time to negotiate an arrangement with the former owner.

“We have been working on this deal for probably two and a half years going back and forth on a lease agreement,” Brian said. “It was slow going. So finally we just decided to shoot him an offer and see if we could do it that way. And he was good with it. I think it worked out better that way because we were able to make all the renovations that we needed to do.”

Brian said that he and his sons are pleased to finally be up and running in Overton.
“We are just excited to be here,” he said. “We have wanted to be here for years. We are going to try our best to serve the community and make everyone happy. And I think that we are all going to benefit from it both us and the community.”
