The rubber match between Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley High School Girls Soccer teams that was hoped to be in the NIAA Region Finals last week came to an abrupt end on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 4, at Bettye Wilson Park in Las Vegas.

Neither the Pirates nor the Bulldogs survived their Semi-final match in the NIAA Regional tournament. The Pirates fell to Boulder City 4-0 in their playoff match and the Bulldogs were shut out 4-0 by Pahrump Valley.

The Pirate loss dropped Moapa Valley to 16-5 for the season. The Eagles move on to the Nevada State 3A Tournament along with the Trojans. The Eagles season record now stands at 15-3-1 while the Trojans move on with a 17-1 season record.

“Overall the Pirates had a tremendous season,” said MVHS coach Lisa Cornwall. “We were able to accomplish a lot, and work on strategies involved in the game. Multiple players held top scoring positions, showing our versatility.”

Cornwall said that the game against Boulder was a rough one for the team. “We felt like we never found our groove,” she said.. “My players always give their all and really as a coach this is what you strive for. I love these girls and recognize their hard work. I am grateful for a wonderful assistant coach, a supportive community and an amazing athletic department. I am already excited about next season.”

The Lady Bulldogs ended their season with a respectful 12-3-1 record. Two of their defeats came at the hand of the Trojans. The Dawgs lost early in the season 2-1.
“Our girls had a great season, they only allowed 8 goals in 16 games,” said VVHS Coach Scott Trimming. “They played extremely well with a lot of the younger ones stepping up throughout the year.”

Trimming said that he believed his team would have made it to State this year if not for injuries and Covid virus issues that occurred during the playoffs.

“We will lose a lot of talent this year with a strong core seniors graduating,” Trimming said. “But the good news is these seniors were great leaders teaching the younger ones. I’m confident VVHS will be back in the playoffs next year and will have a good chance to advance to state.”

Trimming expressed gratitude for this year’s seniors for their hard work. “And our seniors thank everyone for believing in them,” he added. “They will miss representing their school and community on the pitch.”
