LETTER: ANYONE would be better

In her letter last week (Very Worthy: The Progress, Aug. 3, 2022), Sandy Raia points out the obvious: that the Jan. 6 hearings in Congress are not legal hearings but are, instead, purely political. That is certainly clear. She seems to conclude from this that there can be no truth in them. That is not so clear.

Admittedly there are glaring questions being left unanswered by this very partisan Congressional hearing. But anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear can safely conclude that Mr. Trump and his advisors stepped over a line on January 6 – one that could have very nearly resulted in the unravelling of the Republic. That is simply not ok!

To ignore this fact – to divert attention and project blame to all kinds of excuses and conspiracies – is both dangerous and typical of Mr. Trump and his followers. To split hairs over who grabbed what steering wheel, what the Capitol Police were doing in the heat of crisis, what troops were or were not being called in to respond to the chaos – all of that is typical Trumpian smoke-screening.

Even without the primetime hearings, a reasonable person can see what happened on Jan. 6. When Mr. Trump lost the election, he couldn’t let it go. After all, his whole persona depends upon him being “a winner” not “a loser.” So he quickly gathered an angry mob of ardent followers (not difficult for him to do), wound them up with his own signature smoke-screening and sent them marching to the Capitol building to try and stop a legal and time-honored process.

Then, as things got nasty, as they were bound to do; instead of fulfilling his oath as protector and defender of the Constitution; Mr. Trump retreated into his dining room and watched the whole thing play out. He refused to condemn the actions of the mob or to send law enforcement aid, as a real American President should have done. He willfully neglected to carry out the sacred oath of his office!

Like Mr. Worley (Not Worthy!: The Progress, July 26, 2022), I am a lifelong Republican. I consider myself a “Reagan Republican.” I can remember when there was real leadership in the White House; people who respected the insitution of the Presidency enough to never try a ridiculous and dangerous stunt like this.

So I have to say, I would welcome legal proceedings in this matter against the former President and his inner circle. Mr. Trump should have to answer to the American people in a court of law for his subversive behavior and his breach of public trust.

But I also recognize that the courts are no better at discerning “truth” in something like this than is a Congressional hearing.

The best tribunal of justice in this case would be the American electorate. The People should choose better than this; and we can. I agree with Mr. Worley that Mr. Trump is not worthy of another thought in the 2024 elections. Mr. Trump is the very thing that our founding fathers most feared when drafting the American experiment.

As for Ms. Raia’s parting question inquiring who would be a better Republican Presidential nominee in 2024: I am not sure what Mr. Worley would say. But as for me, my response would be “anyone….anyone!….ANYONE!”
