The Moapa Valley High School Girls Volleyball team is ready for another run to the state tournament this year. They come back in the fall of 2022 fully loaded and motivated for a great run.
The Pirates finished last year with a 30-4 record. They marched through the NIAA southern region undefeated at 10-0.
The team’s season ended in the state semifinals with a five-set match against the state runner-up Fernley. The Pirates took a 2-0 set lead, but lost the final three sets.
Truckee ended up winning the state title last year.
MVHS Head Coach Mandie Matheson said that she has a solid returning team this year.
“We have seven returning players with 3 returning starters including the 2021 Southern Region player of the year, Sydney Reese,” Matheson said. “We also added four new talented players to the roster.”
Matheson said that the girls have worked hard in the off season to improve technique, stay sharp and get additional experience.
Boulder City, who has won three of the four past state titles and were a semi-finalist last year, will be one of the teams to give the Pirates a run for their money in the coming season, Matheson said.
“We know we have a target on our back as the returning Region Champions,” Matheson said. “But the girls are motivated to put in the time and work necessary to grow as a team and defend that title.”
The last state championship title won by the Pirates was in 2003 which ended a 14-year straight dominant run for the program.
The Pirates begin their season this weekend with attending the Las Vegas Invitational.Their first home match will be against Enterprise on Tuesday, Aug. 23 beginning at 5 pm in the new gym. The Pirates will also host Virgin Valley on Tuesday Oct. 11 at 6 pm.
