The Moapa Valley High School Tennis teams hit the courts last week to begin practice for the 2022 fall season. It takes a rugged bunch to face 90 minutes of rigorous practice on a concrete court in the heat of the August afternoon. But this team fits the bill. Through rain or shine, these dedicated tennis players are just elated to play this beloved sport.

Optional open court practice was available to the team beginning on July 18. Those sessions went from 5:30-7 pm for returning players and 6:30-7:30 for starting players.

But on Monday, August 8 practices began officially. And Head Coach Donna Swanson along with Assistant Coach Robin Ozaki began the season with purpose and vigor.

Head Coach Donna Swanson expressed her excitement for the new tennis season. “I am most looking forward to the unity in tennis,” she said. “We have great kids that get along really well and I’m looking forward to the team attitude.”

This year the team consists of 19 boys and 19 girls, many of which are returning players. That means much of the team come with a sound knowledge of the game. The prospect of ranking high in the division looks extremely hopeful.

Swanson explained that the upcoming season won’t be all smooth sailing, however. “We are gonna face our competitive teams, like Meadows,” she said. “Most of those kids have been playing tennis since the age of three. So we have some hard schools to come up against. But I think that we will do fairly well.”

Swanson said that she is looking forward to teaching the newer incoming players how to hold a tennis racket and to be a part of their success as tennis players. She said that she enjoys being a coach.

“This will be year 18 for me as a coach and it’s been a long ride,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the game, and to seeing people excel in it. It’s always great fun to see the kids that started as freshman and, now as seniors, they are really quite strong players. That’s exciting because I might have had a little hand in that. But, you know, they work hard.”

The Pirates’ first challenging match will be at Faith Lutheran on Thursday, Aug. 18.

The first home match will be against Virgin Valley on Aug. 22 beginning at 3 pm.
