The Progress
The first ever City-sponsored Community Farmers Market kicked-off on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 21 on the grounds of the Mesquite Welcome Center.
The turnout of shoppers at the event was overwhelming. The parking lot was completely full and every conceivable spot to park nearby was filled. Many had to drive in circles around the parking lot waiting for someone to leave. The line of cars backed up onto Sandhill Rd and traffic control personnel had to be called to keep things moving safely.
Approximately 37 vendors were in attendance to sell their various products. All of these were pleased with the brisk business they were able to do and with the huge crowd of buyers that the event attracted.
The members of the Mesquite Café Blues Band provided their lively music for the kick-off of the Market. They even drew a few dancers from the crowd of shoppers.
There were four busy food truck vendors, but only one fresh produce stand. There is an expectation of more producers joining the event as it continues in 2023. Most of the other vendors were selling Christmas gift items.
Santa and Mrs. Claus were expected. But while the crowd waited for their arrival, the Grinch (Ken Juber) was keeping their seats warm. Shoppers enjoyed taking pictures of this green Christmas villain-turned-good-guy.
The Claus couple did finally arrive giving the kids in attendance an opportunity to get some last minute Christmas requests in. The kids were delighted and the Clauses seemed to have fun too.
Vendor Robyn Hopper of Kiss My Crystals, said that he plans to be a regular at this marketplace.
Shoppers Penny and Lou Prapotnick said they were glad to see a farmers market here. But they hoped there would be more fresh produce vendors in attendance in the future.
Jim and Rosemary Gary said, “We are happy to be out here, we need more things to do in Mesquite.”
They brought along their dog Mercedes in a buggy and planned to visit the Animal Shelter booth while attending the market.
Nicholas Montoya, Director of Mesquite Leisure and Athletics Department reported
“The vendors all said they are looking forward to more events at the Welcome Center. This one was so successful, we are working on future plans for other markets and events to promote the community.”

Yes, we expected more fresh vegetables and fruits. Will this be a continuous farmers market in Mesquite?
