The Progress
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) would like to remind everyone that Sept. 17 is the anniversary of the signing of the American Constitution. There will be a ringing of bells at 1 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial Park on Hillside Drive in Mesquite to commemorate this historic date and time.
The bell ringing starts the celebration of Constitution Week by DAR all across the nation. Ruth Dickie, chair for the Constitution Week committee for the Virgin Valley Chapter, said, “We have something going on all week long. We hope the public will join us.”
The bell ringing ceremony begins at 12:15 with the Mesquite Honor Guard presenting the colors. Mayor Allan Litman and author Jeffrey McKenna will speak. McKenna will discuss how the years 1770 through 1787 changed mankind’s destiny.
His historical fiction book, “Saving Dr. Warren, a True Patriot,” will also be discussed and available for purchase. The Mesquite Bell Choir will be performing.
For a small donation there will be ice water and a bell to ring, or bring your own.
McKenna will visit JL Bowler Elementary School on Sept. 18 at 10:30 to speak to the students about the Constitution. He will speak at 1 p.m. at Hughes Middle School to the students and again at 5 p.m. to adults.
The DAR liberty bus will visit Beaver Dam School on Sept. 20.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Mesquite Veterans Center will be hosting a flag retirement ceremony from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The public is invited. Students from Hughes Middle School are invited to attend and learn about folding and retiring the flag.
The DAR monthly meeting begins right after the ceremony. The public is invited to stay.
