If you know the story of “Steel Magnolias,” you may be a little reluctant to go see it because of the ending. Don’t fret: go and enjoy. This comedy/drama will be playing May 9 at 7 p.m. and May 10 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The play opens with a great beauty salon set design by Brandon Yale.
The play features two actresses who are rather new to the local audience. Kaylee Hackley portrays the kind-hearted Shelby. She does a fine job and puts one in mind of Julia Roberts, who played the role in the movie.

Heather Abbott plays Annelle, the shy new hairdresser with problems who wins your heart as she grows in self-confidence with the help of the outspoken clientele of the salon.
The rest of the cast are theater patron favorites. Michelle Stodfen is the good-natured shop owner and incurable romantic. Nancy Arnold plays the loveable and comical Clairee and town socialite.
Wende Killinger plays M’Lynn, Shelby’s mother, showing off her dramatic talents. Joy Craig plays Ouiser, the chronic, glass-half-empty complainer who tries not to care but does.
Director Kenna R. Higgins has much experience in theater productions. She lives in Moapa Valley and is thrilled to be collaborating with the Virgin Valley Theatre Group. Her directing expertise shows through in this production, as well as her sense of humor.
Attendees Tony and Collett Abeyta told the Progress it was a great show. Their favorite character was Ouiser.
George Hamer said, “The performers all know their lines very well. Joy Craig is playing my favorite character.”
