Mesquite Fire & Rescue and the Mesquite Police Department participated in a full-scale emergency response exercise at Virgin Valley High School.
The simulated scenario involved an active shooter situation. Victims were positioned at multiple locations along the assailant’s path, which ended in a classroom where Mesquite Police officers successfully subdued and secured the suspect.
Once the scene was secured, attention shifted to treating the simulated victims. Fire rescue crews, equipped with ballistic vests and helmets, worked alongside police officers to provide emergency care and extract victims from the immediate danger zone. The patients were then formally triaged and assigned transportation for further medical care.
Air medical transport was provided by Mercy Air 11 and Life Flight from St. George, who participated in the exercise by receiving and rapidly transporting patients to nearby trauma centers.
The primary objective of the drill was to evaluate current response protocols and identify opportunities for improvement. The exercise demonstrated quick and coordinated action by all participating agencies — from neutralizing the threat to delivering prompt medical care and evacuating victims for advanced treatment.
The event organizers released the following statement: “We are grateful for the chance to train together in such a realistic setting and remain committed to ongoing joint exercises that strengthen our emergency response capabilities in complex, high-stress scenarios. We also want to thank Virgin Valley High School for allowing us to use their facility, Mercy Air and Life Flight for participating.”
