This summer, the Moapa Valley pools offer fun in the sun for everyone, whether it is going to the pool as a family or participating in swim lessons.
“I love working at the pool this year,” said pool manager Austin Robinson. “Both the new guards and returning guards are so helpful and give working at the pool a significantly more exciting atmosphere.”
Robinson added, “I especially love to work with the youth and adult classes. The kids are always having a blast, as well as the guards teaching. Every once in a while, I’ll even go in and join the adult classes just to join in on the fun.”
There are various programs taught by local swim instructors going on throughout the summer for both kids and adults at the Clark County pools in Logandale and Overton.

Water Introduction, for ages 6 months to 5, provides the opportunity to build on swimming readiness and introduces the basic rules at the pool. For this class, children must have an adult with them. Children will start learning how to take direction and do basic strokes like freestyle arm movements, etc.
Water Independence class, for ages 3 to 12, teaches kids to be more comfortable in the water and to perform basic swim skills. The participants learn how to get in the water with little assistance and submerge.
Stroke Progression class, for ages 3 to 12, focuses more on technique for basic swimming strokes, including freestyle and backstroke. Students are taught more advanced strokes, including elementary backstroke and breaststroke, as well as survival floating and basic treading.
Advanced Stroke Development, ages 3 to 12, refines the kids’ ability to do basic strokes and teaches them more swimming strokes and water skills. Some of these include feet-first surface dives, sitting and kneeling dives.
All youth must take a water competency test if they want to swim in the deep end of the pools. A parent or guardian should complete the water competency waiver before the test can be taken. Additionally, if a youth wants to dive off the diving board, they must first pass the water competency test before taking the diving test.
Other programs offered at the pools include swim team, water aerobics and new programs as of this summer, including junior lifeguard and adult swim lessons.
The swim team gives participants the opportunity to practice the four major competitive swim strokes. These include butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.
Water Aerobics, for ages 13 and up, provides different methods for water exercise.
Junior Lifeguard Class, for ages 10 to 15, is designed to give kids the opportunity to learn basic skills and what a lifeguard does.
Adult and teenager swim lessons are available for ages 13 and up and are for all ability levels.
Local lifeguards at the pools have gone through hours of training in Las Vegas for certification to be able to supervise activities at the pool. These lifeguarding positions provide summer job opportunities for many youth in the valley.
