Another vehicle fire on Interstate 15 was reported to Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire Department, resulting in three people being transported to the hospital last Friday, July 18.

First responders arrived at approximately 2:00 p.m. after reports of a single-vehicle rollover and fire. When the unit arrived on scene at approximately mile marker 6 near the Virgin Gorge on the Arizona side, they discovered the incident involved two vehicles. One sedan was fully engulfed in flames, while the other sedan had significant damage to the driver’s side.

Authorities confirmed that the preliminary investigation showed that one vehicle had been traveling southbound and, for an unknown reason, crossed the median and collided with the other vehicle traveling northbound. The vehicle that came fully engulfed was not on the road.

Battalion Chief Andres Ojeda said the vehicle fire caused a vegetation fire, which BLM firefighters assisted in extinguishing that same day.

Three occupants were transported by ambulance with minor to medium injuries to St. George Regional Hospital.

Traffic was minimally affected as one lane remained open the majority of the time. From recent reports, the cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Ojeda reminded everyone to drive, focused and aware of the surroundings.

“Be extra cautious, especially when driving through the gorge,” he said.

Mesquite Fire and Rescue Public Information Officer Spencer Lewis reminded everyone that it is still hot and to keep preparing for the weather. Synonymously, he said they have received some rain, especially up north of the Virgin and to be aware and practice flash flood safety.
