The 4-H Youth Aviation Club is offering a unique pathway for local youth to pursue their dreams of becoming a pilot. A collaboration between the University of Nevada, Reno Extension and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter #1707, the program guides high school juniors and seniors through a structured course combining ground school, flight training, and mentorship.
The program was inspired two years ago by a young man named Talon Newsom, who shared his dream of flying but felt it was out of reach. His story became the spark for the club, and this year, Newsom became the program’s first success story by earning his Private Pilot License.

The one- to two-year course is facilitated by UNR Extension 4-H Program Officer Dianna H. Walker and three experienced EAA pilots: Tim DeBerardinis, Greg Witter, and certified flight instructor Charles Crickmer. To provide hands-on training, UNR Extension funded two state-of-the-art Redbird Flight Simulators, which allow students to log realistic flying hours before ever getting into a real aircraft. Students will also go on field trips and hear from guest speakers, including commercial pilots and mechanics.
The program’s goal is to do more than just teach flight skills. It aims to develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and confidence while exposing youth to a fast-growing industry. The program provides mentorship and resources to help students build career-ready skills.
The club has two locations that will meet on alternating Tuesdays. The Mesquite Club will begin Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the 4-H Teen Innovation Center. The Logandale Club will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the MVHS CSN Portable Building.
The public is invited to an Open House and Young Eagles Rally on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Perkins Airfield. Youth ages 8–17 can experience a free introductory flight.
