Summer has passed, and the 2025-2026 school year has begun.
With the first week of school kicking off, here is a look at each school.
Ute V. Perkins Elementary in Moapa currently sits at an enrollment of about 131 students—down from last year. The teaching staff remains unchanged. The school shared that the main goal this year is to improve the attendance of students. The best way is by ensuring sick children come back to school with a doctor’s note. Families are asked to thoughtfully schedule future vacations during the school year. Staff want to thank parents and guardians for their patience through any start-of-year confusion.
“We can’t foresee every problem, but we can work it all out together,” said assistant principal Marianne Ekenstam.
Events of note include the school fundraiser in September and school photos, with no dates set in stone yet.

In Logandale, Grant Bowler Elementary is also down in student enrollment, coming in at around 630 students. There are no new teachers yet. Two long-term substitutes are hoping to finish schooling and become permanent additions in the near future. There are no policy changes, though PTO members are encouraged to look out for the upcoming SOT election. Like Perkins Elementary, the goals for the year include improving student academic achievement, emotional and social well-being and attendance. Parents are asked to bring a doctor’s note after illness, either from a family care provider or telemedicine provider. A doctor’s note ensures there are no penalties for a student’s absence either with the school or the district.
“We’re so excited to meet new students and see old ones again,” said Principal Kelby Robison.

Mack Lyon Middle School’s enrollment increased this year to around 420 students. The school is excited to introduce new band teacher Suzanne Russo to students. As in previous years, parents will have to show ID when picking up children, and the dress code remains unchanged. The school also maintains its no phone policy; any students who bring phones will have to keep them in their backpacks. The year’s theme is “Anchored in Success,” and individual house goals will be focused around it.
In Overton, Moapa Valley High School’s student enrollment is at 556 students at the time of publication, only a few down from last year. There is a slew of new staff, starting with the inaugural year of Principal Duane McMinn. Other new or relocated staff include Jill Laub as the orchestra and guitar teacher, Christy Lewis as APEX credit retrieval, athletic trainer Noah Smith, Alexis Knight as instructional aide and Jose Menor as a sign language aide. Goals for the year include remedying chronic absenteeism, implementing new Professional Learning Communities and working in partnership with families and communities of students to ensure their success. Any important announcements have been emailed to parents, who are encouraged to check frequently.
