The CasaBlanca Casino hosted a golf tournament on Sunday, Sept. 7, to raise money for the families of fallen and disabled veteran members.

This was one of many events that raised money for charities throughout the valley. For example, in August, Brian Wursten presented a $1,400 check to Mayor Jesse Whipple for the animal shelter. This donation was raised during the year by golf tournaments, golfers and Mesquite Entertainment.

Throughout the year there have been seven events for charity.

“We raise about $10,000 a year for charities,” Wursten said. “Many of the participants in the tournaments are regulars. They return each year to participate.”

On Sunday, Sept. 7, 127 contestants were at the Palms Golf Course to enjoy the tournament. Most were residents of Mesquite. For some, it was their first experience.

“I just moved here from Colorado,” one golfer said. “This course is beautiful. This is my third year coming here.”

Another golfer stated, “I like to win money!” He laughed. “Actually, we like supporting causes.”

He pointed to his three buddies, who nodded in agreement. Another golfer was a retired veteran who makes every effort to attend events that support veterans. Two other golfers, Jeanette Johnson and Jim Wilker, said they were thoroughly enjoying being a part of the tournament, even though it was in its beginning stages.

The tournament, which began at 7 a.m., was a four-person scramble using the Callaway format. There was an optional $20 mulligan and on-course buy-ins to raise additional funds for local veterans and Folds of Honor.

The lunch provided for the golfers was a feast: pulled BBQ chicken on a bun, a variety of salads and carrot cake for dessert.

Wursten was enthusiastic about how the CasaBlanca helps the community of Mesquite.

The 21st annual Golf Fore Kids Tournament will take place on Dec. 11. This event helps provide opportunities for children to participate in sports. Toys and money will be collected to help underprivileged children in the area during the holidays. Registration opens on Oct. 1.

“This tournament is so popular that it is usually sold out in 10 minutes,” Wursten said. “It really brings the community together.”
