The week has been very quiet for local first responder departments, Public Information Officer Trooper Shawn Hagglestrom of the Nevada State Police said, “This is a good thing if it is quiet for us.”
All other local departments reported no major vehicle accidents or criminal incidents throughout the week. All expressed their utmost gratitude at the opportunity they had to honor the memories of those who passed during the 9/11 terrorism attacks on US soil.
Both the Moapa Valley Fire District and Mesquite Fire Department held memorial ceremonies last Thursday.
The Beaver Dam Littlefield Fire District was sad to announce the passing of a firefighter on the Dragon Bravo Fire at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This was the same fire that several of their wildland unit firefighters had served on. Seventy-year-old J. Hank Hester from Idaho collapsed on Sept. 8 while working as an equipment operator, supporting hazard tree removal operations. Hester could not be revived. The cause of death was determined to be a cardiac emergency.
The Mesquite Police Department reported in their weekly arrest report that there were eight arrests for drug offenses, six for alcohol violations and one for a fugitive from justice. There were three juveniles arrested for alcohol, drug and assault offenses. The police remind everyone not to drink and drive. Please drink responsibly.
Trooper Haggstrom said the Nevada Highway Patrol will be attending the Mesquite Police and Fire Night on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the west field of the Mesquite Recreation Center. This event is the annual celebration of the first responders within the local community. There will be games, information, tours of police vehicles and even a demonstration by the police and the K-9 units.
MPD said all are welcome to come and have fun as they honor first responders. The event is held simultaneously with the Las Vegas Massacre Memorial, honoring those who rushed headfirst into danger and remembering the victims of the tragedy.
