Nine senior veterans soared over Mesquite in an open-cockpit Boeing Stearman biplane on Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, from the Mesquite Airport courtesy of a nonprofit group known as Dream Flights.

“Dream Flights’” mission is dedicated to honoring military veterans and seniors with the adventure of a lifetime: a flight in a Boeing Stearman biplane. “As we make these heroes’ wishes come true, our Dream Flights inspire them to share their stories,” said Brian Fisher, founder and president of Dream Flights.

Dream Flights offer flights to veterans across the country, mostly those living in senior care facilities. Every year, they come to Mesquite and give flights to veterans residing at Mesa Valley Estates or their spouses.

This year, vet spouses Suzy Bowers and Karen Weigand, along with Marine Rudy Montoya; Army vets Tom Mang, Leo Bayer, Bruce Wisenhunt and Bill Bobbitt; and Air Force vets Lyle Starks, and Alfred Fass, all went soaring 1,000 feet over Mesquite.

Wisenhunt said, “There is nothing like it, flying in an open cockpit.”

Tom Mang was seen making the sign of the cross as they took off.

Leo Bayer said, “I would do it again if they let me. I was surprised at how large Mesquite has grown.”

Each participant was given an 8×10 boarding pass with their name, date and pilot’s name on it.

Mesa Valley Estates brought coffee and morning goodies for the fliers and the guests who came to watch. Also in attendance were the Warrior Women of Mesquite Nevada, ladies from DAR and friends and relatives of the participants. One family came from Hawaii, and another from Florida. Sometimes it was hard to tell who was more excited, the participant or their relatives.

Tim Gardner, Dream Flights director of maintenance, said, “We have given just under 8,000 flights. We have never had a mishap. Our pilots train frequently and are tested every year to maintain quality.”

They took great care in getting even the most infirm participants on and off the plane.

Alyssa Plant, life enrichment director of Mesa Valley Estates, organized this event as well as the many other public and resident-only events held at the assisted care facility.
