The sun was shining and the energy was high as students from Virgin Valley, Grant Bowler, Perkins and JL Bowler elementary schools gathered for the annual speed meet on Oct. 28. The event, held at the Moapa Valley High School track, brought together young athletes from first through fifth grades for a fun-filled day of friendly competition, teamwork and school spirit.
From the moment the first race began, the excitement was contagious. Students competed in a variety of events, including endurance, sprint and relay races, and a unified race in which students of all abilities competed. Each event showcased the students’ determination and effort. The athletes were divided by grade and gender.

In the endurance run, the third-grade boys and girls ran two laps around the track, with the fourth- and fifth-grade boys and girls running three laps. The sprint races were divided into four heats for each grade and gender. The winners from each heat then raced against each other to determine the overall winners.
Parents and teachers agreed that the best part was seeing everyone try their hardest and support each other. It’s not just about winning; it’s about learning teamwork, sportsmanship and perseverance.
Parents and families filled the stands, cheering and taking pictures as their children sprinted down the track. The relay races proved to be the highlight of the day, as teams passed batons with lightning speed and celebrated the finish with high-fives and hugs.
Ribbons and medals were provided to each individual school to be awarded at their own award ceremonies. All the students showed positive attitudes and encouragement toward one another. The meet proved to be a wonderful celebration of athleticism, teamwork and school community. The success of the speed meet reminded all that in the spirit of sports, effort and enthusiasm are the biggest wins of all.
