The Virgin Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution continues to promote literacy in the local schools. The chapter’s literacy committee raised over $1,400 this year in an effort to put a book into the hands of every kindergartener, first grader and second grader in both Virgin Valley Elementary School and JL Bowler Elementary School.
A total of 273 books were handed out to students at Virgin Valley Elementary School on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Another 196 books were distributed at JL Bowler on Thursday, Nov. 13.
“The three pillars of the…Daughters of the American Revolution are historic preservation, education and patriotism. Being that November is family literacy month, we thought this was an opportune time to distribute books to students,” said Leigh Roessner, chapter regent of the Virgin Valley DAR. She went on to say, “We had several generous donors from the community: Washington Federal Bank, Bauman Financial, Kokopelli Landscaping and an individual donation from Pat Fizer.”
Roessner remarked, “The students were very excited and appreciative to receive the books, and we are hopeful that next year we will be able to raise enough money to include third-grade classes as well.”
