For the first time in 19 years, rain caused a last-minute disruption over the Field of Flags on Saturday, Nov. 8, the day before the closing ceremony was to take place.
The flags cannot be furled to store while wet, so the clubs put out a call on social media for help, and many wonderful Virgin Valley volunteers came out and took down 500 flags. The other half were left for the closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
The weather cooperated, and the closing ceremony was held on schedule. It was especially important this year because the Exchange Club is passing the torch of the 1,000 Flags Over Mesquite tradition to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Virgin Valley chapter. Even though it was a joint effort this year, it was a special and emotional time for both clubs.

Paul Benedict, president of the Exchange Club, presided over the ceremony one last time. He remarked on how and why we honor the American flag and veterans with the flag dedications.
Benedict thanked everyone who has helped through the years and recognized Dr. Peggy Purner, saying, “It was her vision and commitment to honoring our veterans that brought 1,000 Flags Over Mesquite to life 20 years ago.” Benedict also recognized Sandra Edmonds, coordinator of the 1000 Flags event for many years. He said both clubs had decided to dedicate the tall flag to her. Edmonds was quite surprised.
DAR member Amy Bradshaw made presentations to Barbara and Paul Benedict and Sandra Edmonds for their service and dedication through the years.
Benedict said, “None of this would be possible without the contributions and sacrifices of the women and men whom these flags honor. I salute them.” He then turned and saluted the flags, creating a meaningful moment felt by all.

Part of the ceremony was a proper flag retirement performed by the Mesquite Fire Department and local volunteers as Benedict read the script for the retirement of the flag, explaining what each color stands for.
When the program ended, all the attendees helped bring in the other 500 flags from the field in case of rain.
