On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Mesquite Senior Games’ last bowling tournament of the year was held at the Virgin River Casino. Seventy-six bowlers from Utah, Las Vegas and Mesquite turned out to compete. Brent and Marsha Michaelsen, along with many others, belong to a league in West Jordan, Utah, and joined forces to participate in the tournament. “I have been bowling for 50 years,” Brent said, “and my wife has bowled for 31 years. This is our first time bowling in the Senior Games.” Other bowlers said they keep returning because it is so much fun.
The event was made possible because of the efforts of Shaun Edwards, Sandy Tudor and Dodi Melendez, along with the help of volunteers. Melendez was just awarded Director of the Year by the Southern Nevada Bowling Association. Beth Clapinger of the Mesquite Warrior Women was responsible for selling raffle tickets and getting 50/50 prizes.

The tournament consisted of three games: men and women’s single divisions divided into five-year increments (50-54 and on up to age 90). There were seven women bowling in their 80s. After the games, the drawings for the raffle tickets were announced. Prizes ranged from a dartboard, golf packages, a basket from the Donkey Museum and many others. Medals were given out. Mike Gentry in the 80-84 age division won two gold medals.
“What is the purpose of the games?” Tudor asked everyone present. “To have fun!” she exclaimed. The bowlers agreed. “We are already making plans for the 2026 games,” she announced.
