The annual Mesquite Parade of Lights to benefit the food pantry at the Salvation Army, now in its 11th year, is bigger and brighter than ever.
Thirty-nine entries paraded down Mesquite Boulevard on Thursday evening, Dec. 4. Spectators were asked to bring nonperishable foods, which were picked up by parade walkers with carts. The food is donated to the Salvation Army food pantry after it is sorted, weighed and marked by Debbie Benham, creator and organizer of the parade.

Anyone can have an entry in the parade, but mostly the entries are from local clubs, churches and business. Awards will be given for first-, second- and third-place floats. The three judges are Julie Goodsell, Nancy Rosen and Stephanie Rowley. The winners will be announced in early January.
The parade is a favorite for the kids. They love seeing the bright lights and getting to visit with Santa right after the parade in front of City Hall. Parents enjoyed the hot chocolate being served by City Hall staffer Nancy Hewett and her helpers.
“Breaking the Cycle” partnered with Camel Safari and added live animals to the parade. A camel, a donkey and a goat led by Allie Singer and Manada Butler from Camel Safari preceded a manger scene on wheels.
Kokopelli ATVs were all lit up, and Ms. Sr. Mesquite queens in their crowns cheered on the spectators. All the entries deserve mentions for a great job and the pleasure they brought the spectators.

Spectator James Davis said he had not seen the parade for a few years. “It sure has grown very nice.”
Benham reported spectators brought 353.4 pounds of nonperishable food to the parade, pushing the total amount collected so far over her goal of 20,000 pounds. They are still collecting food and donations until the end of the year.
Benham said, “Organizing the parade and community food drive is a challenge, but the rewards are worth it. It is rewarding for me personally to know that there are so many people in our community that can come together to create an evening of Christmas joy while helping those in need. I will continue to do this every year as long as I am physically able. Thank you to everyone who participated in this wonderful event.”
