Moapa Valley High School freshman Presley Adams had her first double-double to lead the girls basketball team to a 25-21 win over Green Valley at the Lady Eagles Holiday Invite on Dec. 20.
Adams added three steals and two blocks in the win over the Gators, as the Pirate defense held Green Valley to 35% shooting on two-point field goals and forced 22 turnovers.
Things didn’t go as well against Boulder City on Dec. 19, however. The Eagles pulled away in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Pirates 22-8 in those periods. The Pirates sit in third behind the Eagles in the Southern 3A at 2-1.
Senior Taylee Bunch led the Pirates with nine points, and sophomore Phoebe Leavitt added six on 50% shooting. Adams had 10 rebounds, six steals and three blocks, missing out on a defensive double-double by four steals.
The Pirates also fell to Cimarron-Memorial, 56-16, in the tournament. MVHS head coach Gary Weiss said his team played a “horrible game” against the Spartans, adding that “they smoked us and everyone at the tournament.” Cimarron Memorial is 9-2 this season and turned over the Pirates 35 times.
MVHS fell 30-18 to Southeast Career Tech on Dec. 20. Freshman Ashlynn Hardy led the Pirates with seven points. Adams added 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. The Roadrunners picked the Pirates’ pockets 18 times to overcome missing all 23 three-point shots attempted.
The Lady Pirates are at Pahranagat Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 1:30 p.m. They’re off until Amplus Academy visits at 5 p.m. on Jan. 7.
