The Virgin Valley High School Lady Bulldogs ended 2025 with a 1-3 record at the Las Vegas Classic Basketball Tournament at Bishop Gorman. Virgin Valley faced tough competition from teams from throughout the country.
The Dawgs opened tourney play against a strong Clovis West on Friday, Dec. 26, and trailed 19-16 after one period of play. Mady Wright and Hannah Waite scored five points each to lead the Dawgs early. The Dawgs managed only 10 points in the second period, falling behind 46-26 at the break. Ava Noel had six points to lead the Dawgs. M. Warren led Clovis with six 3-point balls for 18 points. Clovis stretched their lead to 65-43 after three periods of play. Waite had the hot hand for the Dawgs with 11 points in the period.
The offenses disappeared in the fourth and final period, as Clovis only outscored the Dawgs 10-6. This is one of the Bulldogs’ lowest-quarter scores. The final score was Clovis 78-49 over the Bulldogs. Waite led the Dawgs with 23 points, followed by Wright with nine points.
The Bulldogs crushed Flagstaff 63-37 in their second match on Saturday, Dec. 27. The Dawgs edged Flagstaff 16-15 after one period. Waite and Noel led the Dawgs with six points each. The Bulldogs’ press defense took over in the second period, allowing only four points to the Eagles in the period to take a 37-19 lead into the locker room. Waite had 14 points in the half to lead the Dawgs. The Dawgs finished off the Eagles, 63-37, and Waite matched her Friday high score with 23 points.
The team faced Ventura in their second game of the day. The Lady Dawgs fell behind early in the game, 23-14, as Waite kept her team in the game with nine points. Cougar point guard K. Staniland led all scorers early with 14 points. The Cougars finished the first half leading, 36-24. The Bulldogs made a run at their opponents, outscoring them 18-10 in the third period and cutting their lead to 46-42. Wright led all scorers with four 3-balls for 12 points. But the Bulldog offense disappeared once again with only six points in the fourth period, making the final score 61-48 for the Cougars.
Staniland led all scorers with 23 points. Waite finished with 22 points, followed by Wright with 17.
The Bulldogs’ final game of the tourney was a loss to the Lynwood Knights, 57-47. The Bulldogs came out strong, leading 29-18 after one half of play, but they only had nine points in each of the final two periods. All stats were not available. The Lady Dawgs finished 2025 with a 6-5 record and, most importantly, 3-0 in 3A League play. The Bulldogs go on the road on Monday, Jan. 5 to face the 4A Centennial Bulldogs in Las Vegas. They restart 3A play on Wednesday at The Meadows.
