Moapa Valley High School sophomore Anna Winward continued her winning ways with a first-place finish at the Sierra Vista All Girls Tournament in Las Vegas on Friday, Jan. 2. She went 4-0 with three pinfall victories to win her wrestling weight class for the second straight season.
Winward continued her domination into the Moapa Quad on Thursday, Jan. 8, earning a pinfall victory in 32 seconds over Bailey Van Ness of Shadow Ridge.
At the Bonanza Roundup on Jan. 9-10, Winward again finished first with a major decision win, 12-3, over Jaylene Motes of Desert Oasis for the championship. She went 3-0 in her matches to lead the MVHS girls to a 13th-place finish out of 24 teams.
MVHS girls wrestling coach and Anna’s father, Travis Winward, called it “a run that reflects the focus she has shown both on and off the mat,” adding that “her disciplined approach to training, eating healthy, putting in extra runs, and consistently doing the additional work outside of practice has elevated her conditioning, confidence and execution in every match.”
The boys swept their home quad event on Thursday, beating Shadow Ridge 43-23, Virgin Valley 59-15 and Somerset Academy Losee 78-6.
“Caleb Anderson had a great night. He beat a super solid wrestler from Shadow Ridge, James Zuniga, and Micah Woods from Virgin Valley,” said MVHS head wrestling coach Ryan Anderson.
Anderson, Tyson Houston, Felix Ramirez, Tred Cameron, Ryker Katich, Stetson Houston, Grant Conger and Jayden Staley all won all of their matches.
The Moapa Valley boys were seventh out of 29 teams at the Bonanza Roundup on Sunday, Jan. 10. The Pirates were the top 3A team in the tournament.
Stetson Houston finished second at 132 pounds. He led 6-3 with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation when Gabriel Rosado of Desert Oasis earned a takedown and pinfall victory.
Cameron finished fourth at 144 pounds with four victories, two by pinfall and one by major decision.
